The Last White Cop edition by Stephen Sumner Literature Fiction eBooks

A great short fictional story that brings up some very timely topics

Based in the year 2025 in Northern California, this future shows a time when the cultural makeup of the population is very different than present day and the police force is taking measures to change as well. With the caucasian population making up only a small minority, white officers are slowly phased out of the force in favor of other officers that better represent the racial and cultural makeup of the community.

Although some of the topics and themes within the book could have been ripped from the headlines of today's newspapers, the author deals with them from more of a sociological perspective.

Written by a former police officer with decades of experience in both police work and community management the author shows his knowledge of the inner workings of a police department and community politics

The Last White Cop edition by Stephen Sumner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was instantly drawn in from the beginning. It took place in the future but very relatable in this day and age. It left me asking myself what's next?
The author’s personal experiences and our nation’s current events lend themselves to this story’s character’s retrospective look at his law enforcement career in a future society. The personal choices and the political intrigue left me guessing how he could stay committed to the job. A good read that left me thinking.
Our nation is in so much turmoil with the current state of affairs between the public and our police officers. Stories of injustice, mistrust and conflict are often heard. Sadly, race is often associated in these headlines. Regardless of your personal point of view on the issue, Sumner’s life experience in the force tied with his thoughts on what could be is encapsulating. It definitely got me thinking about how the state can relieve the tension between public/police and get the community trusting in those who put their lives on the line to protect them.
What a great read! I was pulled into this book and had a hard time putting it down.
I enjoyed reading this story. It gave alot of background into the policemans life and stresses. Would recommend this as a good read
A thought provoking story of how, in the future, California decides to turn all the state's police departments to 100% non-white reflect the demographics.
In the year 2047, the last white cop in the Sacramento Police Department retires. California had began phasing out all white cops due to the increasing civil unrest occurring over incidents of shooting of non-whites by white officers. This change was also set in motion to bring the police force more in line with the population demographics of the area. This story focuses on the memories of that last white cop on the day of his retirement.

I want to start with the good things about this tale. The author has a clear knowledge and passion for police work, especially in regards to how they deal with the public. His premise is sound and well worth a look. He does a fairly good job of keeping what could be a highly charged story free of prejudices.

Moving on to the more critical points, we unfortunately have a lot. First, this book severely needs an editor. There are problems with misused words, capitalization, grammar (especially commas), missing or extra words, and awkward phrasing on almost every page. The author does the whole telling instead of showing thing that is so common with new writers. This kept me from ever really connecting with the main character.

He seems to be afraid of writing conversations. Instead he will just say what the people said without using quotation marks. The few times he does attempt to use conversation, he embeds it into the middle of a long paragraph.

Many sections are repeated. There are even sentences that repeat the same phrase. (For example The truck driver jumped out of the truck and ran away from the truck.) The author tends to use short declarative sentences. This also tends to cause the author to repeat himself and made the story feel awkward and bulky. This, along with the many errors, hurt the pacing of the story.

There is also the problem that the whole concept seems to be fairly naive. It repeatedly states that the growing immigrant population of California was distrustful of police where they had come from originally. Combined with the inability of many white cops being able to speak their language, their fear and resentment of white cops grew. They were said to prefer officers from their own race. This overlooks two problems that I see. First, if they mistrusted the police in their native country, then it wasn't because they were white. (You have to assume that their native country used officers of their own race.) Secondly, the problem seems to be more about communication than race. A non-white officer that can't speak their language should be just as much of a problem as a white officer. It simply doesn't make sense to assume that every neighborhood will end up with only members of the predominant race patrolling it.

While I felt that most of the story of the story avoided sounding prejudiced, there were a few points where it did cross the line slightly. Perhaps reverse discrimination would be a more accurate term, but still a hard thing to avoid with a story dealing with this particular topic. Still, for the most part, I felt it did a good (if naive) job.

With a major editing job, it could easily be improved. (It would also be able to be condensed into a stronger story. As a side note, the description says this story is 55 pages or so, I found it to be more like 100 pages. I am always amazed at the difference.) My advice would be for the author to join a writing group to help him develop a more fluid style and to help with writing conversations. This awkward and often repetitive style of telling the story, along with the many errors, is the main reason I marked the story down in its rating.(It read more like a police report than a story.) The other reason was that I felt the story didn't even try to explore other options of fixing the problem besides saying get rid of the white cops. I would give it 2.5 stars.
